Clean regularly using a soft cotton or microfiber cloth to remove dust and debris, following the included cleaning instruction card.
Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.
Use protective measures (coasters, placemats, felt pads) to prevent scratches and stains. Epoxy products will chip or break if they fall or hit a hard surface.
Keep away from high humidity or moisture sources to avoid warping and mold.
Handle with care when moving or disassembling to prevent damage.
Hardwoods: are from deciduous trees with broad leaves, produce a fruit or nut and generally go dormant in the winter. Hardwoods are primarily used for long-lasting furniture, cabinetry, flooring and millwork. They have unique markings with variation in grain pattern, texture and color.Common North America’s hardwoods are Black Walnut, Maple, Pecan, Oak, Osage orange, Ash, Cypress, Mesquite, cotton wood, etc Exotic Hardwoods:not available North America and usually imported. Common Exotic Hardwoods are Zebra wood, Wenge, Purple Heart, Yellow heart, Paduk
Softwoods or conifers, have needles rather than leaves. Softwoods are primarily used for structural lumber such as 2x4s and 2x6s, with limited decorative applications. Common North America’s softwood are cedar, fir, hemlock, pine, redwood and spruce, etc.
Air drying wood involves letting freshly cut wood naturally lose its moisture content by exposing it to the surrounding air. This process can take several months to several years, depending on factors like wood species, thickness, humidity, and local climate. Proper stacking and ventilation are crucial for even drying and preventing issues like warping, checking, or cracking. It’s essential to monitor the wood’s moisture levels with a moisture meter before using it for projects to ensure it’s appropriately dried.
Kiln drying wood is a controlled process that accelerates the removal of moisture from freshly cut wood. The wood is placed in a kiln, which is a specialized chamber, and heated with controlled temperature and humidity levels. This process helps to reduce drying time compared to air drying and minimizes the risk of defects like warping and checking. Kiln drying also ensures consistent moisture content, making the wood more suitable for woodworking and construction projects. It’s commonly used in the industry to achieve specific moisture levels within a shorter timeframe.
There are several types of wood finishes used to enhance the appearance and protect the surface of wood. Each type of finish has its own advantages and best-use scenarios. The choice of finish depends on the desired look, level of protection, and the intended use of the wood object or surface. Common types include:
1. Stains: Stains add color to the wood while allowing the natural grain to show through.
2. Varnishes: Varnishes create a durable, glossy, or satin finish that protects the wood from moisture and wear.
3. Lacquers: Lacquers provide a clear, hard finish that dries quickly and offers good protection. They can be sprayed or brushed on.
4. Shellac: Shellac creates a traditional, warm finish and can be used as a sealer or topcoat.
5. Polyurethane: Polyurethane finishes offer a tough, durable layer that protects against water and chemicals. They come in glossy, satin, and matte options.
6. Oil Finishes: Oil finishes, like tung oil or linseed oil, penetrate the wood to bring out its natural beauty and provide a matte or satin finish.
7. Waxes: Waxes provide a soft, low-sheen finish and are often used on antique furniture.
8. Water-Based Finishes: Water-based finishes are environmentally friendly, dry quickly, and emit fewer fumes compared to solvent-based finishes.
9. Wood Sealers: Sealers are used to prepare the wood for finishing by filling pores and creating an even surface.
10. Wood Dyes: Dyes are similar to stains but offer more vibrant color options and can be mixed to achieve custom shades.
11. Penetrating Finishes: Penetrating finishes, like Danish oil, soak into the wood to enhance its appearance and provide some protection.
Oil finishes are a category of wood finishes that penetrate the wood’s surface to enhance its natural beauty while providing some protection. Oil finishes are relatively easy to apply, and they work well on porous woods like oak, walnut, and cherry. They can deepen the wood’s color, highlight its grain, and provide a natural-looking finish. Keep in mind that oil finishes may require periodic reapplication to maintain their protective qualities. Here are a few common types of oil finishes:
1. Tung Oil: is derived from the tung tree’s nuts. It provides a durable finish that enhances the wood’s grain and color. Tung oil takes a little longer to dry compared to other oils, but it offers good water resistance once cured.
2. Linseed Oil: also known as flaxseed oil, is made from flax seeds. It enhances the wood’s appearance and creates a warm, matte finish. However, linseed oil can take a while to dry and can darken with age.
3. Danish Oil: is a blend of oil and varnish that offers quicker drying times than pure oils. It provides a durable, water-resistant finish that enhances the wood’s appearance.
4. Teak Oil: Teak oil is often used on outdoor furniture. It helps protect the wood from moisture and UV rays while bringing out the wood’s rich color.
5. Mineral Oil: is a food-safe option that is commonly used for cutting boards and wooden kitchen utensils. It doesn’t provide a hard protective layer but helps keep the wood nourished.
